Signs of a worn engine mounting on a Hyundai or Kia

Vibration at idle and a knock when you change gear can both point to the engine mounts.

What does an engine mounting do?

Engine and gearbox mountings hold the engine in the car and absorb its vibration. They are rubber (some are fluid-filled) bonded to metal brackets, and the rubber wears and cracks with age and heat.

What are the common signs of a worn mounting?

  • More vibration in the cabin or steering wheel at idle, especially in Drive at a traffic light.
  • A knock or clunk when you pull away, change gear or go over a bump.
  • The engine visibly rocking when someone revs it with the bonnet open.

Is it safe to keep driving?

A worn mounting lets the engine move more than it should, which strains hoses, wiring and the exhaust. Have it checked by a workshop and change the worn mount before other parts get damaged.

Which mounting do I need?

Most cars have several mounts: an engine mount, a gearbox mount and a lower torque mount. Tell us the noise and where it comes from, with your car plate, and we will tell you which mount it usually is.
